Patient Safety Resource Seminar: Librarians on the Front Lines

This interactive seminar focuses on ways librarians can become more involved in patient safety processes and activities - both within their institutions and organizations and in providing patient safety resources for health professionals, for administration and staff, and for patients and families. Topics include understanding the definitions and issues of patient safety; locating where patient safety practices and contacts exist within an institution; identifying appropriate resources; and library advocacy in the area of patient safety. These four hours of lecture, discussion and brainstorming help librarians in all fields become effective agents for improving patient safety. CHIS Level II approved.

Improving the Effectiveness of Your Print Media

Creating print materials that successfully promote and educate require only a few simple guidelines. You also can save money by simplifying your designs, avoiding expensive, mistakes, and creating attractive templates to use more than once. Topics including focusing on your target audiences, writing benefit statements that engage the reader, and applying the rules of legibility to increase comprehension and retention. The first webinar outlines the rules of legibility and professional tricks that you can apply to existing and new print projects. Then, you will send in a pdf of your improvements. The facilitator will create a second webinar based on your submissions. She will share your examples with notes about your successes. The pdf can be a completed project, a raw sketch with copy, or the completed copy. You can also submit a complete questionnaire about the purpose of the project with an outline, art, design specifications, and text.

Institutional Politics - Earning Trust and Respect with Your Peers and Executives

You conduct your work as a medical librarian competently. However, the survival of your library and your career success will rely on institutional politics. Politics are based on your workplace relationships with library users, employees, colleagues, and bosses (all the way up to the executive offices). How are decisions made regardless of what the organizational chart says? Improve influence regarding institutional decision-making. The first webinar presents the main concepts of practical, ethical politics: winning support and developing rapport, aligning with the institutional strategic plan, and building a team of mentors and champions. Participants will have the choice of three different assignments. The second webinar will be based on participant contributions.

The NN/LM NER is putting together a learning day program to explore issues related to health equity and health information resources. Our Communities of Interest(COI)groups have been exploring issues related to healthy communities, health literacy, and workforce issues. We think there is much to learn about equity and access as they intersect with health and technology. GOAL: Explore issues at the cross-section of access to health care and access to health information. OBJECTIVES: * Understand the roles of health disparity and health equity in community and care settings; * Gain an understanding of issues related to the digital divide and how the technology gap affects health information access; and * Identify challenges caused by the digital divide that are specific to health information access.

Health and Wellness @ the Library: The Essentials of Providing Consumer Health Services (Blended Course, MLA 2013 CE)

This blended online/in-person course will be taught at MLA 2013. The goal of this course is to provide participants with a set of specialized professional competencies in providing consumer health information services. By the end of the course, participants will have a deep understanding of the health information needs of their own target audiences/communities, and they will have practical knowledge and skills to build collections, resources and programming to meet the specific needs of their communities. The course begins with activities to learn about the demographic and health status indicators of communities and the implications of the data for libraries and appropriate responses. Participants build on the foundation through readings, discussion and activities about health literacy, reference and services for special populations, unique issues with health-related collection development, mobile apps and content, plus the use of social networking related to health issues. The online component requires discussion and sharing of topics and all assignments to enhance the learning experience of all participants.

Beyond the SE/A is a monthly webinar from the Southeastern/Atlantic Regional Medical Library of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM SE/A). Speakers cover different topics of interest to health science librarians, health care practitioners, librarians, and other health focused groups in the region. Topics include new and updated National Library of Medicine (NLM) resources, RML Awardee presentations on their research and outreach programs, Disaster Resources, Electronic Health Records, and many others related to health science and health care. All sessions are online webinars using Adobe Connect, which allows for live phone conversation and online chat. Beyond the SE/A sessions are held on the Third Wednesday of every month at Noon (ET) and last an hour. Sessions are recorded, closed captioned, and made available for later viewing.
