Course Description:
This course reviews the Joint Commission's current IM standard, as well as other JC standards that the hospital library can support. The major goal of the course is to demonstrate how a Hospital Library's value within its institution can be achieved not only by Joint Commission validation, but also through other accreditation bodies, as well as solid customer service.

Educational Objective:
Participants will learn how to promote their libraries' role in supporting their organizations' JC compliance, as well as other pertient accreditation bodies.
Agenda:
4 hour course -
(30 to 45 minutes) - General introductions, including type of institution, e.g. teaching, non-teaching; current services in place, etc.
(90 minutes) - PowerPoint presentation of all current JC standards which are applicable to Library Services; other accreditation bodies that require library services; as well as other accreditation models.
(90 minutes) -Group discussion/exercises will center on how presentation material can be applied to each participant's institution.
(15 minutes) Wrap-up, questions, evaluations
Need for This Course:
Hospital librarians need to be armed with the knowledge that it will take more the the Information Management portion of JC's Standards to survive. They need to know that Library services can also be used to support many more of the Standards, as well as other accreditation bodies. Additionally, Hospital Librarians need to learn how to think outside the "JC" box in order to validate their worth.
Portions of this course were presented at the at the 2008 joint annual conference of the Medical Library Group of Southern California/Arizona, and Northern California and Nevada Medical Group where it was well received.
The instructional methods used include
Lecture, Slides, Discussion, Brainstorming, Sharing/Self-disclosure, Hands-on Exercises, and Case Study.
