Course Description: As the concept of EBP continues to evolve nurses are maturing into their own understanding of how EBP works in and for their profession. This class is designed to give participants a better understanding of the EBP needs of nurses. Participants will develop skills that will help them to confidently participate in the EBP process. Using a variety of learning techniques, participants in both academic and clinical environments will better understand how they can collaborate with nurses to satisfy accrediting bodies and government organization requirements for nursing practice to be based on best evidence.

Educational Objective: • Understand the issues and concerns that nursing profession faces in the EBP environment • Identify the roles for librarians to support EBP in academic and clinical institutions • Strengthen understanding of a what constitutes a well-built question and how to find the best evidence to answer that question • Develop skills to critically appraise primary and secondary research articles • Experience EBP teaching techniques

Agenda: 1.Introductions [~ 20 mins] 2.Background – State of the Science [~30 mins](presentation) 3.Formulating Questions [~ 30 mins](introduction with discussion and small group exercises) 4.Introduce study types: [~40 mins](introduction with discussion) 5.Finding Answers [~ 60 mins](introduction with hands-on exercises) 6.Critical Appraisal [~ 60 mins](presentation with discussion and small group exercises) 7.Applying the Evidence [~15 mins](presentation with discussion) 8.Putting it into Practice [~45 mins](brainstorm exercise and sharing) 9.Jeopardy [~45 minutes] (team participation) 10.Reflective Writing Break [~ 15 minus] (individual reflection)

Need for This Course: Librarians serving nurses continually receive requests to assist in the EBP process. Nurses’ experiences with EBP differ from other clinicians and librarians need to understand the differences and how best to serve and integrate within this user group. This CE was developed to meet just such a need at the request of state chapter membership.

Participant Materials: Participant handouts; website for follow-up links and materials.

Facility Requirements: LCD; white board or flip charts; computer access, either in classroom or participant’s own; access to internet and databases (minimally CINAHL; PubMed)
